UPDATE: Signed with the Reds.
Pirates got poor performance out to of the third base position in 2019 both with the bat and the glove, in order to compete they need to upgrade.
Colin Moran was a heck of a bench bat for the team last season however he is likely to be the the front runner for the third base job going into spring. If you want to compete out of the gate, that likely isn’t going to do it.
Mike Moustakas would fit most the position perfectly given his expected price tag of two year $20 million would be well with in the Pirates reach.
Moose developed a power bat as his career progressed and is an average+ fielder, both things the team needs. Better defense out of the corner and a middle of the line up guy to drive in runs.
Clearly if the team is looking to push in 2020, Mike should be a primary target. With MLBTR estimating two year $20m, but him just opting out of an $11m deal with the Brewers it would likely take a bit more.
I would offer three year 33 Million back loaded. $7m/$13m/13$m with an option option for a 4th year at $15m with a $2m buy out for a total $35M guaranteed giving him ($11.6 average) or $48m ($12m average)
Like with others a back loaded deal gives the team from protection if the whole plan falls apart. Also like the others you need to convince them to sign, with out a general manager that can be difficult.
