Starling Marte rumors are still going wild. A newer name as emerged as a possible landing spot for him. The Texas Rangers.
The Ranger’s farm isn’t all that strong but they do have some interesting pieces. But the time line on these pieces would like the push the Pirates window back to 2022. With that in mind we look to players who are estimated to debut in 2021 by MLB Pipeline
Sam Huff catcher. Would have to be in any deal. Projects to be a good defender and if he reaches his potential a quality to good power bat. Fangraphs doubt his defense but does still looks to have a good possibility to stay at catcher. With his power bat moving him to first is an option.
Leody Taveras outfield. Speedster with contact that could complete the outfield with Travis Swaggerty and Oniel Cruz who will probably end up in the outfield if an infield spot doesn’t open up. Leody would make a great addition to our outfield prospects. Along with Bryan Reynolds, the pirates could have a very nice outfield.
Tyler Phillips pitcher. Nothing fancy here. Pirates should be looking for lefties but Tyler is the best pitcher they could really hope for in trade along with Leody and Sam. Tyler has a decent ceiling and a fairly high floor as well.
All three straight up for Marte is pushing it a bit. Given Marte’s market, it is closer than what you would normally see. It’s not totally unreasonable to see it is possible.
These three players “should” fit the time line for 2022 and address positions that appear to be needs in that time frame,
